Janne Gustafsson’s memorial

Janne Gustafsson died after a traffic accident in Punta del Este, Uruguay, where he was resting during the break between the first and secon legs of the Whitbread Round the World Race, which he participated in on board the Swedish boat ”The Card” 1989-1990.

Janne Gustafsson was an extraordinarily talented offshore sailor with great international experience. During 1987 and 1988 he was an important member of the  crew and was responsible for the management of the S/Y Royal Blue, which during those years was Sweden’s most successful ocean racing boat.

In memory of Janne Gustafsson and his achievements as a sailor, his comrades in S/Y Royal Blue have instituted the "Janne Gustafssons Memorial Prize".

The prize is awarded to a foredeck crew who has participated in the Gotland Runt race, organized by KSSS, who through skill, endurance, fearlessness, determination or in any other way significantly contributed to his boat's successful completion of the race.

The memorial prize was made of stainless steel by the Finnish artist Nicken from Jacobsstad in 1991.
