Artemis Racing sjösätter sin America’s Cup-båt
Sjösättningen markerar milstolpen för en drygt tre år lång design-, utveckling- och byggfas som tog sin början nästan direkt efter den förra Cupen, 2013 i San Francisco. Den nya America’s Cup klassen (ACC) är 15m lång (49.2ft) och är en utveckling från de spektakulära AC72:or som tävlade i San Francisco, fortsatt med vingsegel och bärplan. De nya båtarna kommer även de vara farkoster som flyger över ytan men i ännu mer imponerande hastigheter.
Klassregeln dikterar designen för stora delar av plattformen och vingen. Innovationen och skillnaderna mellan teamen kommer att ligga i hur de har valt att designa bärplan, kontrollsystem samt aerodynamiska komponenter.
En stor utmaning är att båten endast får kontrolleras av mänsklig kraft. För att till fullo ta vara på denna har Artemis Racing i tätt samarbete med en rad tekniska partners, däribland Altair och Tactair utforskat gränslandet mellan traditionell båtdesign och flygplans-teknologi.
Båtarna flyger och manövrerar bättre än någonsin tidigare tack vare den intensiva utvecklingen under de senaste åren. Bermuda som kappseglingsarena erbjuder dessutom nya utmaningar med de varierande väderförhållanden och de skiftiga vindarna man väntar sig i maj och juni. Sommarens tävlingar förväntas därmed bli de jämnaste och mest spektakulära i modern Amercia’s Cup-historia.
Artemis Racing’s ACC-båt började byggas i januari 2016 på Sune Carlssons Båtvarv, inte långt från teamets hemmaklubb, KSSS i Saltsjöbaden. Skroven flögs sedan till USA för konstruktion och installation av däck, cockpit, pod och balkar på teamets varv i Alameda utanför San Francisco.
Kappseglingsbåten skeppades slutligen till Bermuda där man installerade bärplan, hydraulik och elektronik.

“With over 80,000 man hours in Design and Build it is fantastic to see our boat finally touch the water. Many parts of our new race yacht have already travelled thousands of miles globally; from the construction of our hulls in Sweden, led by Brandon Linton; to pre assembly at our Base in Alameda, California; and onto Bermuda for systems fit out. Getting to this point has required a huge effort from all members of the Team and we cannot wait to see her flying across the Great Sound in Bermuda.”
Närvarande vid dopet var VD Torbjörn Törnqvist, teamet med familjer, sponsorer samt nationella digniteter däribland Bermudas Premiärminister Michael Dunkley.
Torbjörn Törnqvist, Team Principal, kommenterade:
“It’s a great day of course, very exciting to see the result of so many years of hard work in design, engineering and construction; finally here. It feels good, and the boat looks fabulous. Torbjörn continued, “We are now on the home stretch so the phase goes from design and development, to sailing the boat as best we can.”
Även om teamet har stor anledning att vara stolta den här dagen är fokus redan satt på att utveckla, ändra och optimera båten hela vägen till den sista seglingen.

I have been watching this boat slowly come together here in Bermuda over the last few months, and It’s incredibly exciting to see this beautiful machine complete. I really would like to thank the design, engineering, build and shore team for their hard work in delivering the boat to us in race ready condition. It really has been a massive effort by the whole team and it’s now up to the sailing team to get out on the water and see what this incredible boat is capable of.
I know that this will not be the end of our development, we saw during AC34 that there can be plenty of development in a short space of time and so we are prepared for that and looking forward to the next few months.”
